The Sycamore was the first all-British helicopter, and first flew in July 1947. The design work had started in 1944, under Raoul Hafner. It was also the first British helicopter to be awarded a civil Certificate of Airworthiness.
It equipped the British Army and Air Force, and the armed forces of
Australia, Belgium and West Germany.
It served with the British Armed Forces in Malaya, Cyprus, Kenya and Aden.
