Llanberis Lake Railway

just over 3 km, Gauge 60 cm

Along Lake Padarn.. Laid on a section of the former Padarn Railway which transported slate from Dinorwic Quarry in Llanberis to Port Dinorwic (Y Felinheli).

This railway has one major advantage not shared by the others - it is almost directly adjacent to the slate quarry, and certain areas of the quarry can be explored. At the terminus in Llanberis, the old quarry lines converge via a tunnel (now shut off), an incline ( which you can climb to an observation point, high up in the mountain) and a cutting from a short stretch leading into a (now flooded) section of the quarry. The railway shares its locomotive accommodation with the old slateworks, now a slate museum. The terminus is, as its name implies, also within range of Llyn Padarn. The nearby former cottage hospital is open for viewing.

Vivian Quarry, Snowdon speaker. 4 or 5 inclines, road.
